Resumo: The study examines the relationship and the differences between the “pilgrimages” of the old religious societies (and many current non-western societies) and those of the current secular societies, for which it would be more appropriate to talk about forms of “religious tourism”, in which the emphasis is on trips taken due to cultural, spiritual or other reasons rather than because of religious reasons in the strict sense of the reasons that first motivated the pilgrims. Although a few examples are discussed, such as the Camino de Santiago (one of the few cases in the catholic religion where the tourist industry has yet to completely replace the pilgrimage), the analysis is largely centred on Rome, one of the most important tourist destinations in the world, where the space for pilgrims has been gradually transformed into a space for religious, standard and mass tourism. The growing interest in quality and “slow tourism” could be a way of recovering a way closer to that of the pilgrimages.
