Resumo: The San José Central Market is an important symbol of Costa Rica’s historical and cultural heritage. The market contains hundreds of shops and stalls selling food and drink, and local arts and crafts. This study examines the problems associated with the commercialization of arts and crafts for tourist visitors. A descriptive qualitative approach was used to collect data in situ through semi-structured interviews with craft stand and shop owners. The problems identified by the study included: lack of knowledge of a second language; low value placed on arts and crafts items for sale; and price haggling by tourists.
