Resumo: Adventure tourism is one of the biggest and fastest-growing sectors of the tourism industry in Spain, following an exponential rise in demand since it first appeared in the 1980s. Efforts to regulate the roles, responsibilities and activities of professionals within the adventure tourism sector have been ongoing since the first legislation was introduced in 1991. This study focuses on the qualifications and training of the managers and technicians in charge of the sector and its activities, in order to highlight the varied nature of existing regulations, and identify and analyse the different professions regulated by law in Spain. The study uses a bibliographic review of the decrees regulating adventure tourism activities in Spain, and analysis of the official education and training received by these professionals. The results show significant differences between decrees in relation to the qualifications stipulated to work in the adventure tourism sector, and little uniformity within the education and training received by prospective tourism professionals.
